A new book, Batı’yı Seyretmek: Avrupa ve Amerika Seyahatnameleri, co-authored by Prof. Dr. Aylin Özman, faculty member in TED University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations, together with Tanıl Bora and Kadir Dede, has been published by İletişim.
The book examines travel accounts written by visitors from Türkiye to Europe and North America from the early Republican period through the 1960s. Using these travel narratives as historical sources, it explores how the West was perceived, represented, and interpreted by Turkish intellectuals, journalists, politicians, bureaucrats, and writers.
More than a study of travel writing, the volume offers a broader reflection on Türkiye’s modernization process and its multifaceted relationship with the West. Through the perspectives of different travelers, it sheds light not only on changing images of Europe and the United States but also on the ways in which Turkish society understood and defined itself through these encounters.
The book addresses a wide range of themes, including political institutions, social life, industrialization, class relations, technological development, the status of women, migration, the Balkans, and perceptions of Turks in the West. By bringing together these diverse observations, it provides new insights into the intellectual and cultural history of modern Türkiye.
Published as part of İletişim Publications’ research series, Batı’yı Seyretmek offers an important resource for scholars and students working on Turkish modernization, Westernization, intellectual history, cultural history, and travel writing.
