The Special Section on Masculinities, guest edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selin Akyüz, faculty member in TED University’s Department of Political Science and International Relations, has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Alternatif Politika.
The special section brings together recent research that connects critical masculinity studies with political science and international relations. Rather than treating masculinities simply as individual identities or social roles, the contributions examine them as social relations produced through political imaginaries, institutional arrangements, everyday practices, discourses, and forms of representation.
In her Guest Editor’s Introduction, Selin Akyüz highlights the remarkable growth of critical masculinity studies in Türkiye over the past two decades, emphasizing the foundational role of feminist scholarship in the development of the field. She also draws attention to the increasing contribution of political science and international relations to this expanding body of literature. The special section aims to bring together studies that explore the relationship between masculinities and the political from diverse theoretical and empirical perspectives.
The articles included in the special section examine the production and transformation of masculinities across a variety of political and social contexts. Topics covered include fragile masculinity and the securitization of women in South Korea, hypermasculinity in Donald Trump’s National Security Strategy, national sovereignty and fatherhood in John McGahern’s Amongst Women, treasure hunting as a gendered political practice, and civil society organizations’ experiences in engaging men in gender equality initiatives.
Through its interdisciplinary perspective, the Special Section on Masculinities makes an important contribution to the expanding field of critical masculinity studies and encourages further dialogue between gender studies, political science, and international relations.
